Bali Gen is located in
the village known as Penestanan--a short walk from Ubud. According to history, Ubud once had a king
who was very fond of aesthetically pleasing art. He sent word out that
all who contributed a piece of unique art to his palace would be given
land in his kingdom. So people with artistic trades as painters, stone
& wood carvers, jewelers, basket & textile makers, etc. were all given land.
These artists had families and raised their children
as apprentices, to practice their particular artforms. Soon villages grew that
each specialized in their own type of art. So today, the evolved villages are known two ways,
they all have a formal name, like Penestanan, and they are known for
the art they create, like the "Painters' & Bead Workers' Village."
Some of the other surrounding villages that also have amazing art for sale include
the: "Silver Jewelers' Village, Wood Carvers' Village, Stone Carvers'
Village, Basket Makers' Village, Batik Workers' Village", and many others.
Ubud is considered the artistc and cultural center of Bali.
